Review of True Lies (1994) by Tommy H — 06 Apr 2015
True Lies works as an action film and a romantic comedy. Arnold and Jamie are very cute together. They elevate every scene they're in because of their chemistry. Tom Arnold is great, too. He's the perfect sidekick actor.
If the lead actor is funny then Tom is hilarious, if the lead actor isn't funny Tom comes off as a SNL reject. Maybe he's a good judge of character and he lacks confidence working with unprofessionials.
Like in even the worst Arnold movies, the action here is great. The action is thrilling, but what makes this a classic is the playfulness of the whole thing and Arnold and Jamie's adorable performance.
The best Arnold movies are the one's where he's quiet and unemotional (Predator, Terminator, Conan), and the movies where he connects with the cast members. True Lies is a good example of what I'm talking about.
Arnold isn't a good actor, he just seems like a really nice guy, and he can also be pretty badass. And Jamie Lee is a very underrated actress. She's great in everything she's done. Her genuine schoolgirl performance in Halloween was definitely one of the movies selling points.
