Review of True Lies (1994) by Nick H — 05 Apr 2010
I caught this on TV the other day. First time I had seen it in years. This movie is brilliant for a lot of reasons.
Arnie is usually entertaining. Bill Paxton the same. Jamie Lee Curtis, was also excellent in this movie. But what really make this movie work was the fact that it took the silliness and ran with it.
A lot of movies go balls-out with the action and expect that to carry the movie. Thus enters the mistake. Don't get me wrong. I love a good action flick. But one that relies solely on big explosions alone doesn't bode well. Humor is always welcome, which this movie has.
But it also really ran with the ridiculousness. It's almost (but not quite) a spoof of action movies. It knows it's silly and that's why it works. You find yourself laughing at it, but at the same time going "ow" at some of the action sequences in it. It's a wonderful mix of the absurd, but believable (in some ways).
