Review of True Grit (2010) by Darrin M — 27 Jun 2012
It says something when a movie I was not excited to see slowly turns me to its side by the end of the picture. Such is the case with True Grit. Almost too absurdly simple of a premise, the Coen brothers wring every last bit of pathos they can from the material without being melodramatic.
They take plenty of time establishing the relationships between Bridges, Damon and stalwart newcomer Steinfeld, leaving the actual plot as a secondary consideration. That's really my only problem with the film, aside from the annoying slow fades between scenes.
We want the epic showdown with the Brolin character, though it never happens. But that's not what True Grit is about. (Special mention of the way Steinfeld commands each scene she's in regardless of her acting partners, easily equaling or surpassing their performances through force of will.
