Review of True Grit (2010) by Hari A — 05 Aug 2012
A remake of the 1969 John Wayne classic of the same name, this Ethan Brothers venture has a lot that qualifies it as one of the better westerns out there. The story of 14 year old Mattie Ross (Halie Steinfeld) who seeks revenge for her father's death by hiring Rueben 'Rooster' Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to kill Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). Aging U.S. Marshall Rooster's drunk, sloth-ish behaviour might not look good on his CV, but he possesses True Grit is what they say. The movie details Mattie, cogburn and Texas Marshall LaBoeuf's (Matt Damon) adventures as they journey through the western lands in pursuit of the the killer.
One of the key highlights of the movie is the photography. Jeff Bridges is immaculate as Rooster Cogburn, his western accent feels so much in place. Halie Steinfeld as Mattie Ross also shows tremendous maturity, as is expected in her role. One thing that felt out of place for me was Matt Damon. I just cannot fathom him as the western Texas Ranger type. Not taking any credit away from him, his supporting role was brilliant but just that he just didn't seem to be at the right place.
Concluding, one of the few movies wherein the remake is as good as the original.
