Review of Troy (2004) by Aodhan R — 08 Oct 2014
I think the casting of Troy wasn't that good. Brad Pitt may be a reasonable option for the mighty Greek warrior Achilles. Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom Play the princes of Troy, and Bana manages to play Prince Hector as a man of honour, but Bloom's take on the younger brother Paris isn't much for the audience to satisfy with.
The main plot centres around Paris's love for a beautiful princess of Greece, called Helen. Paris's decision to bring Helen back to Troy escalates tension between the Greek king Menelaus and the Trojans.
Menelaus's brother Agamemnon has other plans for Troy as he leads a Greek fleet over a 1,000 ships to the beaches of Troy, along with their greatest warrior Achilles. Troy is then at war with Greece, over a foolish but hard decision made by Paris.
Orlando Bloom isn't a bad actor, but Paris and the part he plays in the movie is not what audience would hope for. The movie does contain brilliant production design, costume design for the warrior outfits and armour and props as well.
There is also major battle scenes that deliver spectacular entertainment, mostly from the swing of the sword by Brad Pitt, as he's in character as Achilles. And there's an iconic man-to-man combat scene which has the greatest warrior of Greece, Achilles, and the greatest warrior of Troy, Hector fight one another.
I find it to be the best part of the whole movie, it's the part we were all waiting for, and I'm glad director Wolfgang Peterson managed to present that well!
