Review of Troy (2004) by Morgan C — 11 Sep 2012
Hugely disappointing film. For one thing it was impossibly long and drawn out, making for a very dull viewing.
The acting is often terrible and hardly believable. Watching Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom or Eric Bana spouting the language of the time is wince-inducing, and therefore, very hard to watch. The battle scenes are uninteresting, as we've seen it all before in better movie such as Lord of the Rings or Gladiator, and for another thing, there isn't enough action, and when there is, it's been so Hollywood-ised that it too becomes hard to watch.
Of course the music is good, but as if a soundtrack could carry an epic war movie. Some of the camera movements and angles are ravishing, and the scenery special effects are great but then totally unrealistic sounds of battle are smashed over it, demeaning the whole thing.
The saving grace of the film is the performance of Rose Byrne as the captive love-interest of Pitt's, who's performance is excellent.
Over all, a waste of time, but if you are in desperate need of killing 2 and 1/2 hours, watch Troy. But keep your expectations low.
