Review of Trouble the Water (2008) by Robin T — 07 Jul 2011
Powerful personal account of one couple's experience living through Hurricane Katrina which was only the beginning of their struggles. This film is a stark testament to how the government was so out of touch with the needs of their constituents. Film of the water's rising and the 911 callers who were told help was not coming. One women said I'm sitting in my atic and the water is still rising. I am going to die. The operator just says, "yes.".
Even after the storm, the National Guard didn't come around to the ninth ward to look for bodies. When a group of displaced residents requested they be taken in at a military base, they were threatened and guns were drawn. We live in a rich country and could have done a much better job responding to this disaster. Japan's response to their earthquake and tsunami put us to shame.
