Review of Tron (1982) by Hatem A — 04 Feb 2011
1.5/4.0.
Disney's "Tron" has evolved into some kind of cult classic and was a moderate box office hit. I just don't feel it works today - it surely does not stand the test of time. The breakthrough of the time is that the movie is entirely computer generated (with the exception of the actors), but given the technology today, it just looks stupid.
Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), a software engineer, wants to hack into ENCOM's mainframe to prove his work was stolen by the now very senior executive Ed Dillinger (David Warner). He ends up being sucked into the digital world by the "Master Control Program" being the only "user" in a world of programs. His aides are the software versions of his buds - Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) and Yori (Cindy Morgan).
The movie is forgettable and feels overlong (despite a 90 min running time), the plot and script are silly and supporting players are just average. Jeff Bridges may be the only good thing here - he elevates the material as much as he can! Written and directed by Steven Lisberger. Nominated for Two Oscars: Costume Design and Sound.
