Review of Troma's War (1988) by Shaun B — 29 Dec 2012
Filled with juvenile humor that any 14 year old boy would lap up is found here in this late 80s B-movie exploitation trash flick from Troma. I suppose this would be one of the "lighter" side of exploitation movies so it can work as an introduction to those who may be morbidly interested but do not want excessively realistic gore.
Nothing here is realistic at all. In fact, Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman have set out deliberately to make a bad movie, but it's also a satire of several items most of which is deliberately ruining all of cinema's rules for decency.
The acting is terrible, the script is idiotic and only occasionally funny, the misogyny is overwhelming at times.....but then again this was produced during the golden age of direct to video (midnight movie if you were lucky) and both Herz and Kaufman make sure that every dollar went into the production.
..so at least it has THAT going for it. B/c it never takes itself seriously at any point, one may be forgiven if they find a soft spot in their heart for such a pointless but strangely entertaining and compelling movie.
One full point docked though for excessive scenes of rape (simulated) that provided no value to the movie whatsoever (it's a movie aimed at 14 yr. olds from 1988).
