Review of Troll 2 (1990) by John M — 14 Sep 2013

Happy accident. So this is about a family that goes on a vacation for the month to Nilbog, participating in some household exchange program (...?), only to find all of the inhabitants of the town are all goblins in disguise, trying to trick them into eating vegetables so as to turn them into half-plants in order to eat them.

I finally took the time to watch one of the most infamously bad movies ever made, and let me tell you, I had a great time. Don't be put off with how I am rating it, as I am grading it purely from a filmmaking standpoint; it is unintentionally hilarious to the core.

The thing about making a good bad movie is that you can't set out to make a bad movie; if you wink too hard at your audience, the joke ceases to be funny, and then you end up with something like Machete.

You have to have a madman sitting in the director's chair and let it happen naturally, and that's how you wind up with something like Troll 2 or The Room. Everything about this is fun if you watch it in the right atmosphere, from the clunky exposition to the wooden performances, from the laugh-worthy troll masks and make-up to the drunkenly penned dialogue, there is nothing here that doesn't fail hard.

This is the type of movie that the more people you watch it with, the better, and it ends up being a create-your-own MST3K.
