Review of Troll (1986) by Robert A — 07 Oct 2010

This movie is pretty bad, but its okay for its time. Its pretty cheesy, but cheesy movies are not always bad. But in those rare instances, we have these boring and stupid attempts at horror movies. Let us asses this terrible flick. So it starts off with a new family moving into this apartment with a whole mess of crazy characters each with their own little quirks, we have the generic 80's man whose always looking for sex, the hunter and war veteran and so on. So surprising enough the movie starts off quick but without any explanation. The little girl goes into the basement to get her ball, and the movie just gives you the feeling that the Troll is going to try to scare you, and it tries to but fails. Without any explanation there is a flash and the Troll becomes the little girl. This movie has problems right from the get go. There is little to know back story on anything which is not always a bad thing, but this kind of thing needs a story to make some kind of sense. The whole plot makes almost no sense and you really have to pay attention in order to develop a basic understanding of this whole film.

Now following this flick would not be so hard if it wasn't so boring. It does not really try to shock you or pump you up with the action. Its just there. A whole boring film. As the story moves along, which does take some time despite this being a somewhat short film. It gets to this point where one of the inhabitants is a witch and realizes the dangers of the Troll, she teaches the brother of the girl who the Troll has taken captive. Its the kind of story that you can expect. At this point the ending becomes very apparent, and a happy ending is in sight.

Overall this movie is not entirely bad, the acting was decent and the plot was mediocre but I think with a little extra time and polishing this could have been an interesting cheesy little B movie that many could enjoy.
