Review of Triple 9 (2016) by Orlando O — 27 Jun 2016
Triple 9 plays as a paranoia corrupted cop drama film that does create the eerie tone but leaves the rest of the film to fall into a convoluted script. Basically, a plot following corrupt cops with a group of criminals working on heist jobs for the Russian boss. Following, people betraying others for there greed. A film that follows a couple of sub plots, while everything gets tied together in the third act were everything turns into a bloodbath. Although, the plot was never engaging nor thrilling for the matter. Director John Hillcoat tried to create the little paranoia when people could not trust their own, especially without looking in the back seat for a surprise. The plot does have a couple of twist and turns, but nothing surprising especially when all these characters are left undeveloped. Even the action shoot out sequences was kind of dull.
Triple 9 does have a whole variety of talented cast like Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Gal Gadot, Teresa Palmer, Normal Reedus, Woody Harrelson, and Kate Winslet. Sadly, the script was shallow enough, that the characters were not appealing or had a characterization of their own. Winslet is a great actress; her playing the antagonist Russian Irina was not ideally a great idea. She did have an accent that was coming and going. Also, the film's editing was not coherently. Triple 9 is a thriller that has a plot that goes nowhere.
