Review of Triple 9 (2016) by Maksim B — 17 Jun 2016
A grim neo-noir B-thriller, Triple 9 is a violent, blood-soaked movie which will satisfy the fans of the genre with good twists and roper story-building. It may not quite manage to keep its pacing at a level to consider the story breath-taking or tensed, but it depicts an intriguing set of morally compromised characters worth of being explored.
A group of corrupted police officers execute a heist for the Russian mafia and just when they think that the can just cash in their part, they get blackmailed to execute a second, more dangerous and even impossible heist. With limited time left to organize it and with detective Jeffrey Allen (Woody Harrelson) trying to investigate them, the group of dirty cops are quickly going out of option which leads to the creation of a desperate plan.
John Hillcoat's movie has so many references to classics such as Training Day or Street Kings, that comparisons are inevitable. It is true that the story is uneven and sometimes too slow, but on the other side the grimmy realism and formidable presence of Anthony Mackie, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Casey Affleck ensure that the audience will remain intrigues and engaged by their characters. The hopelessness of their situation will challenge the viewers to determine for themselves the border of what is morally acceptable or not.
In conclusion, Triple 9 is a passable delivery that is worth being seen if you are looking for a decent thriller with excellent acting for a calm Sunday evening at home.
