Review of Trick 'r Treat (2007) by Samantha V — 30 Apr 2012
Trick 'r Treat is a very clever and very scary movie. Though released straight to DVD, it has the effects and acting worthy of the Theaters. The movie is a little like Creepshow (1982) but instead of each segment as individuals, they all have a connection. In particular is the fact that it all happens in the same town on the same night and is watched by a little character called Sam. The very character you'll see on the movie's title.
In the movie we have a murdering principal who shows bad behaved kids a very unique trick, 4 kids who play a prank on an outsider that find out what a mistake it was to mock the resting place of 8 deceased kids, a group of girls about to have a Halloween spook at their party, and an Old Man who is soon about to learn the consequences of not celebrating the year the dead walk the earth. Little Sam appears watching most of the events but plays a bigger role in the last part.
The film is very original and well made, there is really nothing I can complain about except that some of the stories were put in reverse order but that's just me really. Trick 'r Treat doesn't sell itself short of anything. This will not be the typical B movie that will just be a decent way of spending Halloween watching. Horror fans will treasure this gem forever!
It is a slight comedy but for the most part, you'll be screaming a lot more than you will laugh. This is a movie that is not only afraid to show deaths that are painful just to watch, it even has the guts to have children die in the movie. As you know, not many movies, even horror ones, are brave enough to make a move like that.
Now, this film is not only gory, it really does build itself up with scares that mentally scar oneself in another way. This is not a film for the faint of heart and even if you are not faint of heart, it would be wise to make sure your in a position so that if you faint, you'll not fall and break something. It really is that disturbing. And as you can imagine, This is DEFIANTLY not a film for children. It will traumatize them for life.
In conclusion, Trick 'r Treat is a very disturbing but great horror movie. Not recommended for those easily disturbed or of underage. But if you're a horror movie fan looking for a treat in movies that will scare you and change your view about Halloween, this is a perfect choice of movies.
So remember, always keep the your Jack O' Lantern lit, less you end up in one of Sam's horror shows!
