Review of Trespass (2011) by Mike D — 14 Apr 2012
If a Nicolas Cage-starring nearly direct-to-DVD release is not of a warning sign for people, I don't know what is. That said, 'Trespass' shows more promise than it should, thanks to an appearance by Nicole Kidman, but fails to deliver due to an abundance of screaming fits, generic plot twists and escape attempts.
There are many superior home invasion films out there ('Panic Room,' 'The Strangers,' 'Home Alone,' to name a few), and 'Trespass' really doesn't offer anything new.
True, there's the whole knowing your intruder aspect, but even that is not enough to save this film. There are moments when the cast seem less robotic, but they are shortlived and lose out to Nic Cage's generally bad acting that spreads like a virus.
Still, the film has a few scenes that keep your attention, especially the final moments when the giant mansion that serves as the setting for nearly the entire movie earns a heated starring role of its own.
Despite its many flaws, 'Trespass' is at the very least worth a stream on Netflix Instant Watch.
