Review of Treeless Mountain (2009) by Tom M — 26 Oct 2010
Director So Yong Kim sticks to the objective angle in her sophomore film Treeless Mountain, essentially a story about abused children, but without even hinting at the melodramatic and exploitative. Like In Between Days before it, Treeless Mountain is naturalistic to the extreme, even to the point of placing the camera at the kid's eye-level, just to make sure to get the right perspective.
Kim also works hevily with close-ups, creating an intimate feel and a sense of fragility surrounding the characters. And if child actors can be rated, these get full marks.
