Review of Treasure Planet (2002) by Tim S — 01 Feb 2013
I know I can't be alone out there in saying that Disney's Treasure Planet is only a mediocre animated film. I'm sure a lot of the people who saw it as children have a nostalgic fondness for it and a lot of their love for the film really stems from that, but really, this isn't the kind of film I expected it to be.
Actually, I'm not sure what I expected. I think I got what I wanted, but I just didn't like it all that much. I found the lead character with the emo haircut annoying and found his motivation for wanting to make his mom proud pointless because she's never around to see him do the things that he does in the story.
The mix of computer animation and traditional animation was like oil and water too. Usually it mixes well like in, say Futurama, but it doesn't here for me. It wasn't terrible, but it didn't quite reach the levels of animated awesomeness that the adult in me was craving.
I wouldn't call it a wasted effort, but it could have been a little better.
