Review of Trash Humpers (2010) by Liz M — 21 Jun 2010
Yeah...This is extremely tough to review and I can't say I've fully digested this film. I would say Korine has definitely accomplished a completely original film, but not one with redeeming value. Filming on video and having the look of a badly edited vhs tape brought a rawness to the film, but unfortunately this wasn't balanced with the main characters. They seemed a little too forced, like the team of 'Jackass' trying to be weird and creepy. I basically wanted the realism of Gummo and not actors with masks mocking a strange lifestyle. There were some golden moments, but they were only when 'real' people interacted with the 'humpers'. These scenes were very reminiscent of Gummo, which is probably why they stand out for me.
So, this film was a mashed collection of heavy handed creepiness that had no real congruency. I would still recommend it for complete originality, but I would treat it more as a pure avant-garde work.
I guess I don't hate it, or love it.
