Review of Trash Humpers (2010) by Jochen W — 25 Dec 2010
Like some horrible trainwreck, as much as I wanted to I couldn't look away. Though Harmony Korine has never been much my thing, I found myself appreciating Trash Humpers despite kind of abhorring it all the way through.
And I THINK that's the point. It's meant to look like shit and be totally disgusting, depraved, and bizarrely comic as a fucking nightmare. Still, it feels like Art only because it's actively non-art.
It's like for every goddamned romantic comedy with Katherine Heigl, something like this needs to be created on the other side. It's like that movie Twins, and this is the Danny DeVito. To sum up Trash Humpers, it's a movie that some people will wear like a merit badge of Cool and some will regret and some will say "Oh, I remember Trash Humpers that shit was fucked UP.
" I'm still left with the impression that those who actively like this movie are missing the point, and even though I hated it I still thought it was an interesting, and fuck, maybe even VITAL piece of cinema that will serve as a grotesque snapshot of 21st century suburban decay.
It's barely watchable, but I'd say it's easily more watchable than most of the trash playing at AMC right now, and that shit cost MILLIONS to make, whereas this clearly cost like five bucks.
