Review of TransSiberian (2008) by Jeff E — 12 Nov 2009
What starts out as a young couples adventure across Siberia turns into an intense thriller as they get tangled in a scheme far more dangerous than they could imagine. The stark setting combined with great cinematography create a tangible sense of isolation.
Characters take the forefront of this movie since the vast majority is filmed on a train and under this increased scrutiny, most deliver amazing performances with one exception. Woody Harrelson falls a bit short as the goofy, naive, train loving husband or perhaps the character himself just feels out of place.
Ben Kingsley is brilliant as a Russian detective tracking down the murderer of a drug dealer. This man never fails to scare the living crap out of me. He is the Mona Lisa smile of sinister. Overall, a well done film that slowly gets under your skin.
