Review of Transformers (2007) by Connor M — 07 Jul 2014
An entertaining and striking visual experience that will not be replicated by its successors. Sure, this has the staples of a typical Michael Bay film: shallow characters, poor humor, and a bloated story.
What this film does better than is successors is that it is not quite as filled with bile. Watching Shia LaBeouf play a wimp hero is ridiculous. That is quite possibly the poorest bit of casting in the entire franchise.
Megan Fox has the acting skills of sandpaper, but is honestly not given that much by the script to begin with. Michael Bay certainly loved to use the camera on her. Supporting actors like John Turturro and Jon Voight make adequate, but forgettable appearances.
Where this film redeems itself is in its visual elements and action sequences. Seeing the Autobots transform and battle similarly-sized Decepticons is fun to watch. If only that could stay more consistent in future installments.
.. Ultimately I enjoyed Transformers but acting, stale script, and other Michael Bay anomalies ultimately do not make it stellar altogether.
