Review of Transformers (2007) by Jordan P — 21 Nov 2018
There is a lot of undue hatred towards this film. I first watched it with a friend whose family had a home theater and once it was over I was flabbergasted. Now, I had loved the 3D effects that I had seen within Spiderman 2 and the Lord of the Rings series, but overall, there weren't a ton of films I had seen up to this point with large scale CGI that was worth watching.
In fact, I remember while seeing Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, I thought that they probably never would be able to fully animate a CGI character that looked real, especially in the case of facial reactions.
The Ock arms in Spiderman 2 looked great, but those were mechanical, not facial structures, so it wasn't exactly a far reach. So what did Bay do? Make mechanical faces. Smart move, and the special effects for this film were, in my mind, revolutionary.
People will talk about the curse of films being "Bay'd" as if it's a bad thing, when really such people seem to have lost what it takes to be entertained. The choreography and pyrotechnics are spot-on, as I previously stated the CGI is phenomenal, and the story delivers a clever, if somewhat inconsistent, narrative.
The only real error for this film was making it have such a long run-time and casting Megan Fox, who generally struggles to act throughout the film. Not many action films can get my blood pumping quite like Transformers, plus the nostalgia will always keep me coming back.
