Review of Transcendence (2014) by Ana B — 14 Nov 2014
A mix of drama, thriller and science-fiction that tell us the story of happy couple, Will and Evelyn Caster, IT scientists building a self-aware super computer, but due to the ethical implications they are targeted by a terrorist group and Will is poisoned. In the days leading to his death Evelyn attaches Will to the super-computer and uploads his personality and knowledge to it with the help of their friend Max. When Will dies he transcends to the machine. With the help of Evelyn and with full access to the internet "Will" quickly starts to make controversial decisions that end up altering the environment and the people surrounding Evelyn. At some point even she realizes that they might have gone too far.
Yet another film over the struggle between mankind and artificial intelligence in a possible nearby future; it is otherwise quite an original take on the subject with strong performances by the three main leads. I find the plot coherent but towards the end there are scenes too far fetched, they ask you to make a great leap of faith which is detrimental to the story.
It is an entertaining film that hints problems that mankind my find not too far ahead.
