Review of Transcendence (2014) by Jt K — 19 Dec 2015
Not as bad as its toxic word-of-mouth and utter commercial failure might lead one to believe; Transcendence is still a belabored, tonal mish-mash. At the start, it's a surprisingly affecting story of loss.
But once the sci-fi trappings of the plot surge to the fore-front, it loses any emotional investment and isn't smart enough to satisfy on an intellectual level (ironically enough, given the subject matter).
That are a lot of fascinating philosophical questions with this material, but the movie never delves deep enough to really bring them up, let alone address them. By the end, it all ends with a whimper and is ultimately underwhelming.
Sure is pretty though.
