Review of Transcendence (2014) by Marshall L — 20 Mar 2015
While not a cyberpunk film in the traditional sense, Transcendence crystallizes the concept of a digital singularity and who will govern that world. Gone are the killer robots of Terminator and Robocop, and they are replaced with Johnny Depp's consciousness spread across the entire industrialized world.
To understand the movie, you have to compare it to a much maligned sci-fi film, Star Trek:The Motion Picture. In both, a disembodied consciousness seeks world domination, and in both, the widespread aggression is supposedly stopped by "inferior" humans.
Upon closer examination, however, in both films the consciousnesses stop themselves. Will the singular consciousness be smarter than man? Almost certainly. Will it be wiser? That's a whole different question.
