Review of Trance (2013) by Megan H — 15 Mar 2014
The film gains an unreserved 5 stars purely as a non-conformist piece of excellent directing and narration that defies conventional "categorised" films.
Many critical reviews point this as its negative, implying the lack of coherence due to the mix of heist/thriller/non-linear storytelling jumbles into a non-being that's neither heist/thriller/psychological drama, and I say it's a GOOD THING. The combination of cross-genre elements elevate the film into a new dimension away from the expected non-linearity of say Nolan or pure heist/thriller of any other Hollywood production.
Perhaps it is this non-conformist approach that lead McAvoy being engaged with this film, as he personally stated a disgust at British films attempting to dumb down to generic commercial films to reach a wider audience.
And it's a GOOD THING, because the day Boyle stops innovating in his own direction is the day I will stop watch his films.
