Review of Trainwreck (2015) by Manuel C — 21 Nov 2015
Someone in my home without permission to rent this did so. The film is not appropriate for kids. I reluctantly watched it, since it was rented. Admittedly, I don't care for Schumer, but I gave this a fair chance.
Didn't work for me, and took three stops to get through it. The female protagonist Schumer wrote was completely unsympathetic, and didn't have any redeeming qualities. Her final micro-change was way too little, way too late.
I did not care about her at all. I like Hader a lot, and he did his best, but the connection between the leads felt awkward, forced, unrealistic and never clicked. To her credit, Schumer did a FAR better job acting than I expected.
However, the movie wasn't funny at all. I laughed exactly once. In the end, it was better than I thought it would be, but I didn't care for it. Further, it was a clear ripoff of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA in many ways, which I couldn't past.
I don't like basketball, which didn't help either, though I doubt it would have made a difference if it was hockey or football that had been in the story. To sum up, it felt formulaic, uninteresting, and I didn't care about the protagonist.
