Review of Train to Busan (2016) by Meredith C — 21 Mar 2017
This is hands down the best zombie film I've seen since 28 Days Later. The feeling of dread that things are going to go south soon - and very badly - is planted in the opening sequence, and with the exception of the necessary exposition to introduce us to our main protagonists and set up the outbreak (and how the zombie gets on the train) the film rarely slows down, and when it does it's usually just long enough to set up the next bad thing that you know is coming.
This is done so well that even though you can see a left turn is about to happen to our characters you wait for it with that initial sense of dread, rather than the ho hum attitude many films in this genre wring from their audience ("Why are you going in a basement? Of course the zombies are going to be in the basement! Idiot.
"). The characters are also well crafted and well acted enough to be distinct and get you emotionally invested in their stories. You may even cry like a little girl in certain spots (I know I did).
And the suspense carries through literally to the final minutes of the film. This is an outstanding addition to the genre.
