Review of Trading Places (1983) by Bob R — 02 Jan 2010
One of my favourite films of the 1980's and has definitely stood the test of time. I loved this film, the cast are superb, the story is simple but effective and the comedy just keeps on coming. Eddie Murphy was riding a rollar coaster of great films in the 1980's and this must be fairly near the top; he'd gone all egocentric and nutty professor by the 90's and thought he could play everyone and maintain the humour - he was wrong.
It is working with Dan Ackroyd and bouncing off the other characters where the comic timing and character skills of Eddie Murphy really comes out. Dan Ackroyd spends most of the movie playing the straight man alongside him, but does have definite scenes where he comes to the forefront as a comic actor.
Its (mostly) wholesome family entertainment that everyone can enjoy and if you haven't put it on for a while; then you should - watch out for outstanding performances from Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche as the superbly devious Duke Brothers.
