Review of Toy Story 3 (2010) by Kevin P — 17 Feb 2018
Strengths: Waiting over a decade after part two, Toy Story 3 had a ton to live up to. With the first two being classics, new director Lee Unkrich had to deliver something new, while staying true to what made the series work. He succeeded. Like part two, the new characters introduced worked well here. Lots-O-Huggin' Bear (Ned Beatty) made for the best antagonist of the series. His origin story was very well done and made you feel the right amount of sympathy. The other new standout character was Ken (Michael Keaton). He was a great source of comedy throughout. Again, the animation was top notch. They keep managing to take things that worked in the series and while adding just enough to keep things fresh. Toy Story 3 manages to be funny, emotional, suspenseful, and a genuinely great prison break movie. Imagine that.
Weaknesses: As with the first installment, I can see how this might have some content that is hard for children to grasp. The scene where the toys nearly die in the incinerator is heavy for kids.
Overall: Another incredible entry into the series. They told the perfect story for this point in the lives of these characters and did so with the flair we're used to in this series. It's the perfect capper. People can argue about Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, but for my money, Toy Story is the best trilogy in film history.
