Review of Toy Story 3 (2010) by Kyle C — 30 Jul 2014
First off, congrats to Pixar's for a) another Best Picture nomination and b) creating a great series that will be remembered for generations to come.
That being said, I believe that Toy Story 3 is overrated. Do I feel the same about Toy Story 1 and 2? No. In fact, I absolutely love both of those movies. And I like this movie too. It's just..certain parts of it have a "been there, done that" sort of quality to it.
There are some parts that are unique like the whole Andy going to college thing (which by the way, no I did NOT cry at the ending of this movie) and there were some interesting new characters who I wish they did more with (at least we have Toy Story of Terror!). But, this movie recycles major plot points from Toy Story 2.
For instance,.
1) Woody gets separated from the rest of the group, again.
2) Woody meets new characters through said circumstance.
3) A fat villain who wasn't played with/ignored by children is the main antagonist.
4) A scene involving a Buzz Lightyear out of character (Toy Story 2 was with the other Buzz).
Btw- am I the only one who thinks that Buzz is pretty bland as character? I can't remember anything about him besides that he's loyal.
This movie is also very...dark. Darker than it probably should be. It lacks the nice backgrounds of the first two movies, which I guess is just more of a personal preference. This movie is more of prison break than anything else.
Also, I don't like how the characters reacted to poor Woody. Like why did they not believe Woody that they were meant to go into the attic? We will never know, but WHY WOULD WOODY BE LYING TO YOU? They were very stupid to think that.
Although it seems like I have a lot of problems with this movie, anything involving Woody in this movie makes this movie spectacular. The new characters he meets. His escape from the day care was amazing animation-wise. And the emotions with him and Andy, although I didn't cry, still had some very touching emotions near the end. This movie does (no pun intended) toy with your emotions, and it's very effective. I wish the entire movie was devoted to this, but alas, Toy Story 3 is, in my opinion, is not the spectacular movie everyone has been saying it is. It still has plenty of beautiful moments, but not enough to grant it a Best Picture nomination. I love this movie though and congratulations on keeping your winning streak alive, Pixar.
8/10 Amazing.
