Review of Toy Soldiers (1991) by Scott S — 19 Oct 2009
Toy Soldiers (1991) -- [6.5] -- When Colombian terrorists seize control of an all-boys' school, the teens band together to help the military bring the baddies down. "Toy Soldiers" is unabashed adolescent male fantasy where kids wield weapons and save the day, though not all of them live to see that happen.
Maybe it's a guilty pleasure, but I think "Toy Soldiers" is good corn. Sean Astin is the perfect lead for this type of movie -- a more stereotypically tough guy might have pushed the movie over the edge.
Keith Coogan and Wil Wheaton play two of Astin's buddies. Louis Gossett Jr. and Denholm Elliott are endearing as the dean and head master. R. Lee Ermey ("Full Metal Jacket") and Jerry Orbach ("LA Law") are also featured.
