Review of Toy Soldiers (1991) by Bill M — 06 Aug 2017
Toy Soldiers is one of those movies you used to hope to find in the vhs store back in the 90's or on this endless lists of stuff on Netflix that you end up scanning through, a perfectly packaged piece of violent, lurid, action packed, high quality junkfood cinema, with a ready made vhs/dvd dvd cover synopsis "terrorist's take over a school full of the worst misfit kids in the country, kids fight to take the school back".
Essentially Die Hard meets The Breakfast Club, it's a surprisingly brutal, bloody, action filled great time. With strong performances from both it's young cast, including an uncharacteristically cool Sean Austin and a very good, very brooding Will Weaton plus a great adult cast, with the terrific Louis Gossett Jr as the dean of the school and Indiana Jones's venerable Denholm Elliot as the headmaster (yeah I though the dean was the American version of a headmaster too) this is such a beautifully formed little blood spattered treasure of a film, it's fun and often tense as fuck.
It's like The Goonies with headshots.
