Review of Towelhead (2008) by Sandra H — 26 Sep 2008
A disappointing film given the potential for greatness with its subject matter and superb cast. unfortunately, this movie made me cringe throughout, and not just because of the humiliations endured by jasira, the protagonist.
I was cringing at alan ball's poor adaptation in its shallowness of character development and inconsistency in portraying jasira as a young woman coming of age. as written, her behavior was not just naive, but at times, just plain unrealistic and even laughable.
essentially, this is a flawed interpretation of a 13 year old girl by a middle-aged white dude. the movie, while being expository, fails to deliver an effective message.
