Review of Towelhead (2008) by Sara M — 05 Jan 2009
I'm not at all surprised that women like this movie much more than men do. It manages to capture the confusion of a girl's innocence reaching sexual maturity in a particular society. In Jasira's world, this includes the confusion of race issues.
This movie and Welcome to the Doll's House manage to portray this ambivalence better than any others I have seen. It is a girl's coming of age movie. Coming of age for girls in Western society unfortunately often does involve some level of sexual abuse and Jasira, with only her neighbor to understand and help her, does not know what to think of the attention or how to handle it.
