Review of Towelhead (2008) by Richard J — 12 Jan 2009
Despite the rascist title (Towelhead), this is essentially a coming-of-age movie about a 13-year-old Lebanese girl's induction into sex and maturity. The sexual situations are creepy and I wanted to send her to a sex counselor.
The politics are represented by her rascist dad (Peter Macdissi giving the best performance in the movie), and the Gulf War in the background. There's too many issues going on here. Is her Army reserve neighbor (Aaron Eckhart) seducing her because of her ethnicity so is the enemy to be conquered? Why is her other neighbor (Toni Collette) so caring? Why is her mother (Maria Bello) so nonchalant? There's enough material here for a mini-series but this movie is definitely for the art-house viewer.
