Review of Towelhead (2008) by Tony P — 03 Sep 2009
Nearly every moment in this film is simultaneously twisted and hilarious. It's definetely in range of Alan Ball's other suburban commentaries, but with such a broad cast of characters pooling their assorted racial and sexual conflicts, Towelhead is his most layered piece.
The story moves swiftly, its scenes short and sweet, though some material is extraneous. The script offers a well-crafted arc from sexual innocence to sexual maturity, and Summer Bashil's performance transforms alongside it with precision.
Aaron Eckhart is once again notable, as brave and committed as I've seen him. Maria Bello, Peter Macdissi, and a guy named Eugene Jones also turn in unique perfomances. It's a smart film, thematically loaded, and dangerously funny.
