Review of Towelhead (2008) by Curt F — 12 Oct 2009
You know that uncomfortable moment before Chris Hansen of To Catch A Predator fame comes into a room and busts pedophiles? This movie is two hours of this uncomfortable feeling.
The acting was solid enough, I had a problem with the plot though. I understand that it is was about Jasira and her coming of age tale, but it just didn't work for me. She was surrounded by monsters of every race, age, and religion and her reaction to them was not believable in my opinion. I am a big Alan Ball fan (who directed this) with Six Feet Under, True Blood, and American Beauty. This effort is not in the same league.
The birth at the end with her smile and symbolic re-birth was corny in my opinion and provided a forced happy ending in a story that there is no happiness with. At least Ball is consistent, her young friends mock her, her neighbors abuse her, and her parents hurt her, all races, all creeds get in on the pain. She should have been a much darker character for what she had been through.
I did agree with the father's opinion that George H.W. Bush should have taken out Saddam Hussein in Gulf War I, imagine how much better off we would be with no encore years later?
