Review of Touch of Evil (1958) by Gabriel D — 22 Feb 2008
Brutal, stylish--one of the best noirs ever made, about the borders around countries and between people. The cast is uniformly superb--Heston is more than tolerable (I usually can't handle him), Leigh gives her role some real class and verve, and Welles' performance is just amazing--a towering (no pun intended) achievement of character on film.
And he's typically brilliant behind the camera as well--excellent writing, and a frenetic, energetic visual style that is central to the film's success.
