Words cannot sum up the breathtaking 5-minute opening. Along with that, this film has the perfect cast for a noir picture: Heston is charismatic even when unconvincing as a Mexican; Janet Leigh has never been sexier; Ray Collins has a welcome appearance; and a young Dennis Weaver provides the invaluable kind of screwball comedy that Welles loves.
I really hate it when people say that Welles "spent the rest of his career in decline". How can that be said when he hit three home runs during this period? First the gorgeous "Mr. Arkadin", then one step better with this gem, and finally topping BOTH of them with "The Trial" in the next decade? The words Orson George Welles are a blessing to society.
He is what he has been and always will be: a lord, a god, and a titan (for many years, all of these he was...).
