Review of Touch of Evil (1958) by Max J — 11 Jun 2010
Well, this is a film which was so bizarre and creepy that I was shivering at the end. It ranks in the same scary league as "The Night of the Hunter." What a absolute thrill this film was. Orson Welles' direction and acting was fantastic, along with that of Leigh's, Heston's, and Dietrich. Dietrich, by the way, looks amazing in this film (the woman who never aged). Such an astounding and beautiful film!
Now this is where I have a problem, and it is not with the film at all. It is with the Academy Awards of 1958. They got it wrong completely. Gigi winning Best Picture and Direction along with eight other academy awards (including the special award for Maurice Chevalier) is quite insane. Touch of Evil and my other favourite from 1958, Vertigo, won nothing! Now these two films are regarded as masterpieces and Gigi is not remembered as well. Vertigo and Touch of Evil were screwed over by the Academy Awards. Vertigo should have been the Best Picture and Touch of Evil should have at least been nominated. What a rip!
