Review of Topsy-Turvy (1999) by Kin H — 22 Jul 2009
Everything one might expect from a typical lush, high-gloss British period piece. The most interesting thing about Leigh's direction to me is how easily this film blends into its vaunted genre despite its director's typically unusual working method.
The funniest scene by far is a rehearsal in which Gilbert instantly berates his actors for the tiniest deviation from the text he's written. Imagining Mike 'Improv' Leigh directing this scene provides ceaseless amusement to me personally.
It's really, really long, but I can't say I wanted it to end. One of those films that's not exactly on the fringe of anything, but it's full of solid, unwavering quality from beginning to end.
