Review of Topsy-Turvy (1999) by Hawk L — 14 Oct 2009
The story of Gilbert and Sullivan making "The Mikando" in 1884.
What a brilliant representation a 19th-century theatre production!!!
The films costume, make-up and sets are phenominal, and the actors involved does a brilliant job at portraying these operatic thespians. One can clearly see a lot of research has been done in the making of this movie! I love how the filmakers captured the reserved nature of the era. Everything is done with so much etiquette and taste, it is just marvelous!
The movie does however have more than one very long and very reserved dialog scenes and some of them (according to me) goes on for a bit too long! I also thought that the filmmakers could have done a little bit more with the Sullivan character, but this being an ensemble film, I realize this is easier said than done.
Look out for some great performances by Allan Corduner and Timothy Spall, and as always I looove Shirley Henderson!
Not for the average moviegoer, but a great cinematic achievement!
