Review of Topaz (1945) by Bob W — 10 Jul 2007
This is one of my favorite Hitchcock films. It looses a star because the VHS and version they put on television is horribly edited...so bad that it doesn't even have a linear plot...things just happen.
I tried this movie twice over the course of 10 years and just couldn't feel it. Then the DVD came out full of the scenes that were cut, long sequences, and the ending that was supposed to be used.
I love the full Theatrical version. It's brilliant full of intrigue and Hitchcock touches. It also features an "unfamiliar" ensemble full of actors that were not STARS...if it were someone like James Stewart playing Andre I don't think we would have been able to separate the man from the actor.
..it's one of my favorite films.
