Review of Topaz (1945) by Peter W — 19 Feb 2008
Some fantastic shots and a pretty ambitious film yet it lacks real interest in a way. Perhaps the choice of actors or the minimalist acting from the non communist characters makes this a hard film to watch without breaks.
I find that Hitchcock's later films have either an abundance of excess or a reduction of excess that borderlines on parody and contemplation--perhaps a recognition of the his style becoming a cliche.
Perhaps this was the aging Hitchcock's subtle farewell to spy films. Fantastic use of communist crowd scenes.
