If 'Top Gun' is about Maverick coming into terms with his sexuality — as Tarantino explained in that hilarious video — then 'Top Gun Maverick' is about Tom Cruise saving the cinematic experience. When Ed Harris' character tells Maverick that "his kind it's headed for extinction", Maverick's "But not today, sir" is Tom Cruise's war declaration to streaming services.
As long as he's alive, no film of his will debut on any platform. Even if you hate the guy, you gotta praise his commitment to the good old habit of going to the cinema.
