Review of Top Gun (1955) by Andrew D — 07 Feb 2013
"I feel the need! The need...for speed!" With the re-release coming up and the hype surrounding this movie, I decided to finally check this 80's classic out. Unfortunately, I hate to say that this film is a bit over hyped.
Granted, this film really has some spectacular action scenes and some good dramatic portions as well, but the film just can't seem to balance itself out too well. Top Gun stars Tom Cruise as Maverick and Anthony Edwards as Goose, a team of fighter pilots who have earned their way into Top Gun, a school for the best of the best pilots to become even better.
While there, the two go through lectures of how to fly and flying themselves around to keep practicing. However, a tragedy occurs that devastates Maverick and brings his career into question. Should he continue? Should he quit? Was what happened his fault? Now, I really did like Top Gun.
Tom Cruise does a great job portraying Maverick. I also really enjoyed the action scenes that can be seen throughout the film (especially the big one at the end). However, there are some bad things about this film as well.
While the film has its exciting moments, there are some bland elements as well. Particularly the love story between Cruise and Kelly McGillis. I don't know why it didn't work. They had the chemistry.
I'm guessing that it had to do with the script, which brings me to another thing. There's some bad dialogue in this film. It makes some of the scenes go out of proportion and makes the whole thing unbelievable.
Despite these problems, Top Gun is still a fun film to see. It's a bit over hyped, but it can still be a good time.
