Review of Top Gun (1955) by Nicholas H — 25 Apr 2013
Admitting I never saw a 1980s classic like Top Gun until 2013 is half the battle here, but being honest about what I saw needs to be done as well. And, well...
I don't think I would have ever bought Anthony Edwards being a bad-ass Navy pilot. Heck, I'm not buying his awful mustache. It's almost as awful as the 'love affair' between Maverick and Charlie (Kelly McGillis, trying so gosh-darn hard).
What this is, ultimately, is a testosterone-fest full of fancy one-liners and takeaways but lacking the kind of substance to make it as revered as it seems to be. An average film with above-average flight scenes.
