Review of Top Gun (1955) by Meredith W — 19 Jul 2014
Still supercool, even if parts of the story are overly cheesy and clichéd. Tom Cruise and his winning, cocky smile (making him perfect for this role), cool names like Maverick and Iceman, awesome aviator glasses, that shirtless volleyball scene, sweeping shots of jets screaming through clear blue skies, and Danger Zone playing every five minutes.
...what's not to love. Action, humour, romance, sadness... this has it all. The music is very effective at setting the mood and complements the feel of the film. Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" effectively signposts the romantic storyline between Cruise and Kelly McGillis.
