Review of Top Five (2014) by Kate H — 01 Apr 2015
I really like both Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson so perhaps I am a slight bit biased here but I really enjoyed this. I feel like I've seen similar films like this before but I've never seen one in this perspective.
Chris Rock plays actor Andre Allan, a stand up comedian who hasn't performed in years and is trying desperately to get away from a comedic franchise and be taken seriously as a dramatic actor. Rosario Dawson is Chelsea Brown, the next journalist in line to interview him about his new dramatic film which is not doing well. They end up spending the day together, walking through New York, and talking about all kinds of things.
It actually has a very Woody Allen meets Richard Linklater vibe to it but, as I said, completely different point of view. There are moments that are crass but hilarious, funny but sad, but it feels a lot like watching stand up at the same time as much as there is a very limited amount of it in the film. There's nothing sacred between Chelsea and Andre by the end and there certainly isn't anything between Chris Rock and the audience either - he knows how close Andre Allan is to himself.
Funny and thoughtful and even the actors who drop in for cameos are great to watch. I really enjoyed myself.
